Collecting the pull-tabs from cans is an easy and fun way to support the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Eastern Iowa & Western Illinois.
The pull-tabs collected at the Ronald McDonald House of Iowa City are shipped to a recycling center for processing. RMHC of Eastern Iowa & Western Illinois receives money from the recycling center based on how many pounds of pull-tabs get delivered. Annually the pull-tab collection program generates over $14,000 to support services for the families and children that RMHC of Eastern Iowa & Western Illinois serves. Every pull-tab saved helps!
If you would like a pull-tab "house" as shown by the picture to your left, please contact the Ronald McDonald House at 319-356-3939. We are happy to mail you a few, but please arrange a pick-up in Iowa City if you need to order a large amount.
Elementary School Contest
Registration is now under way for the 2013-14 Elementary School Pull-Tab Contest. The deadline to join the contest has been extended to Nov. 8.
We have some exciting new features to this year’s program!
1. In an effort to make the contest more equitable between schools, results will be calculated by highest average pounds collected per student. Example: If Lincoln Elementary collects 300 pounds of pop tabs and has 250 students at their school, their average pounds collected per student is 1.2 pounds/student.
2. This year we are asking schools to be creative about their pop tab collection containers! Schools can create their own collection containers and submit them into the Pop Tab Collection Box Design Contest. The design must contain the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Eastern Iowa & Western Illinois logo and be 4 inches wide x 3 inches deep x 4.5 inches high. There must also be a place to insert pop tabs. The top three designs will receive an award and will be featured on our website and Facebook where people can go and vote for their favorite design.
DEFENDING CHAMPION: Cardinal Elementary in Maquoketa won the 2012-13 pop tab collection competition by collecting 425 pounds! In all, 33 schools combined to donate nearly 5,000 pounds of pop tabs.
The following information might be helpful in explaining the pull-tab program to students participating in the contest.
