In 2022 at their 20-week prenatal appointment, Daniel and Madison learned one of their twins had a very serious and severe congenital diaphragmatic hernia. “Her outcome looked grim, but we tried to have hope.” Unfortunately, they also learned Madison was showing signs of preterm labor and was admitted to the hospital until their girls arrived. “We knew we were exactly where we needed to be, but it was so scary. I was able to receive medication for their lung and brain development.” At just 22 weeks and 2 days gestation they welcomed their twin daughters into the world. Baby Gwendolyn was immediately admitted to NICU, but unfortunately baby Lola did not survive.

Embarking on a lengthy NICU stay, the Waterloo couple reached out to Ronald McDonald House Charities of Eastern Iowa & Western Illinois. They got a room and stayed the entirety of their 134-day NICU stay until Gwenny was released. “RMHC provided us with meals, snacks, parking passes, compassion, kindness, and so much more.” They spent holidays at RMHC-EIWI, celebrated Gwenny’s milestones and developed a connection with the other families and staff. “Ronald McDonald House became our home. In the end it was very bittersweet to leave.”

“We are so thankful for RMHC and everyone who helps contribute to the organization. Without it we would not have been able to stay close to our daughter for the 20 weeks she stayed in the NICU. We are forever grateful to Ronald McDonald House Charities.” Gwenny is now a healthy and happy child!
